During the summer of 2026, I took my first trip to Africa, visiting three countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Before the trip, I kept thinking about one question: how could I best record my experiences along the way? As a fairly bad photographer, I found myself turning to sound recording instead. It was an unexpected choice, but it made me pay far more attention to what I heard in each place, and I discovered how much interesting “noise” usually goes unnoticed.
I’ve gathered these recordings into this interactive sound map. The 20 recordings range from striking to seemingly trivial moments from the trip: disco music in a Kenyan matatu, a Mandarin lesson at a Chinese temple in Dar es Salaam, a cock crowing in Lusaka… I hope you enjoy listening!
